The Illinois State University guitar studio offers a supportive environment for classical guitarists to explore a myriad of guitar music through the decades while developing excellent technique and musicianship.
Students receive weekly lessons and masterclasses consisting of technique sessions, performance forums, and discussion. Students perform in the various recitals and are given the chance to perform for visiting guest artists. Among those who have come include Denis Azabagic, Johannes Moller, Lily Afshar, and Adam Holzman.
In the fall of each school year, the guitar ensemble focuses on duets and trios to build small group bonds and cooperation. These allow students to focus on a variety of musical styles and work with other students. Spring semester, the Guitar Ensemble will work together as a large group, performing an ensemble piece together. These rehearsals often happen during Masterclass time.
All guitarists perform in guitar ensemble. In the fall this ensemble performs in small groups which combine for a large ensemble in the spring. Upperclassmen get to participate in ensembles with other instruments. The annual guitar ensemble performance at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival is a highlight for all guitarists.
All majors and minors automatically are Illinois State University Classical Guitar Society members, and many off-campus organizations turn to the Society for their music needs. Teaching opportunities exist through the University's Community School for the Arts and the local music stores.
