Drumlines at ISU are open to ALL Illinois State University students—we want YOU to be a part! ISU Drumlines perform at Illinois State Athletics events throughout the school year. The Big Red Marching Machine Drumline performs with the BRMM during the football season, and our Basketball Drumline provides entertainment for fans at Men's and Women's Basketball games.
Instrumentation consists of Snare Drums, Multi-tenors, Tonal Bass Drums, and Cymbals.
If you are interested in participating in the drumline or having them perform at your event, please contact Dr. Ben Stiers.
As one of the newest performing ensembles on campus, the ISU Basketball Drumline entertains audiences at select Men's and Women's Basketball games and other events during the Spring semester. The group performs both on and off the court to add excitement to the gameday atmosphere.
Auditions for the 2016-17 ISU Basketball Drumline will be held on Tuesday, January 17 beginning at 6:00 pm in Cook Hall 212. (If you are interested in auditioning but cannot make this time, please contact Dr. Stiers to arrange an alternate audition time.) A PDF of audition requirements and PDFs of all audition music can be found in the menu to the right. Members of the BRMM Drumline in the fall are not required to re-audition for Basketball Drumline in the following spring if they want to play their same instrument. No audition is required for those who wish to play cymbals. Audition requirements are as follows:
During the Fall semester, the ISU Drumline functions as a section of the Big Red Marching Machine, appearing at all home football games, parades, and other BRMM performances, and also performs independently at select campus events. Learn more about becoming a member of the Big Red Marching Machine.
The BRMM Drumline attends all rehearsals (including preseason Band Camp) and performances with the Big Red Marching Machine. In addition, each week the Drumline also holds a 90-minute sectional rehearsal, and each sub-section holds its own one-hour rehearsal—the times for these rehearsals are determined at the start of the semester according to the schedules of members and staff. If you're willing to put in the time and energy to learn the music and participate in rehearsals and performances, we'll find a spot for you! The selection process for snare drum, tenor, and bass drum is typically competitive. Please email Dr. Stiers if you are interested in participating.
Auditions are required for all members playing snare drum, tenors, and bass drum.
Snare and tenor auditions will be held on Saturday, May 6, at Cook Hall on ISU's campus. Check-in will begin at 9:30am. We will perform a group warm-up/run-through from 10:00-noon, lunch (on your own) will be from noon-1:00, and individual auditions will be held beginning at 1pm. If you cannot make that date, video auditions are an option as well. Audition music, requirements, and video submission guidelines can be found in the menu to the right. Results will be posted within a week after the audition date. Bass Drum auditions will be held during our June mini-camp (dates below). Cymbal audition information will be posted soon.
2017 ISU Drumline summer mini-camps will be held on the dates below. These camps are not required, but members are expected to attend if available. More details on the summer mini-camps will be posted soon as well.
Mini-camp #1: June 9-11 (Fri-Sun)
Mini-camp #2: July 7-8 (Fri-Sat)
Mini-camp #3: August 4-6 (Fri-Sun)
Each summer mini-camp will run from approximately 1pm on Friday afternoon to 6pm on Saturday or noon on Sunday. Camps are not mandatory but are HIGHLY encouraged—these camps are integral to our ability to refine music that we will be performing throughout the season. Meals are on your own and housing will be arranged among members of the drumline.
