Drumlines are open to all Illinois State University students. ISU drumlines perform at Illinois State Athletic events throughout the school year. The Big Red Marching Machine Drumline performs with the BRMM during the football season, and our Basketball Drumline provides entertainment for fans at Men's and Women's Basketball games.
Instrumentation consists of snare drums, multi-tenors, tonal bass drums, and cymbals.
If you are interested in participating in the drumline or having them perform at your event, please contact Ben Stiers.
As one of the newest performing ensembles on campus, the ISU Basketball Drumline entertains audiences at select Men's and Women's Basketball games and other events during the spring semester. The group performs both on and off the court to add excitement to the gameday atmosphere.
Auditions for snare, tenor, and bass drums will be held on Monday, December 2 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Cook Hall 212. Students with a conflict during the audition time may submit a video audition or contact Ben Stiers to set up an individual audition time. There is no audition required to play cymbals.
To join the email-list please contact Ben Stiers.
During the fall semester, the ISU Drumline functions as a section of the Big Red Marching Machine, appearing at all home football games, parades, and other BRMM performances, and also performs independently at select campus events. Learn more about becoming a member of the Big Red Marching Machine.
The BRMM Drumline attends all rehearsals (including pre-season Band Camp) and performances with the Big Red Marching Machine. In addition, each week the Drumline also holds a 90-minute sectional rehearsal, and each sub-section holds its own one-hour rehearsal—the times for these rehearsals are determined at the start of the semester according to the schedules of members and staff. If you are willing to put in the time and energy to learn the music and participate in rehearsals and performances, we will find a spot for you. The selection process for snare drum, tenor, and bass drum is competitive. Please email Ben Stiers if you are interested in participating.
Preparation is already underway for the fall 2021 season. All prospective members should email Ben Stiers as soon as possible to indicate which instrument(s) they are interested in playing.
Auditions are required for snare, tenor, and bass drums. 2021 BRMM Drumline auditions will be conducted via video and are due by Sunday, May 8. Audition packets are now available by emailing Ben Stiers. Audition results will be emailed to all auditionees by Wednesday, May 12. Placements are tentative and depend on progress through the summer and BRMM Band Camp. There is no audition required to march cymbals, but those interested in cymbals should also email Professor Stiers.
The ISU Drumline will meet twice during the summer to rehearse music. These meetings will be held on the Illinois State University Quad and all coronavirus (COVID-19) guidelines will be followed. These meetings are not strictly required, but members are expected to attend if available. Those unable to attend will be given video assignments to make sure they are keeping pace with the group. These meetings are integral to our ability to refine music that we will be performing throughout the season. Meals and any overnight housing you may need are your responsibility. Additional details about each meeting will be emailed to all members—be sure to check your email frequently through the summer.
Saturday, July 10: Drumline meeting #2, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Cook Hall (Illinois State University Campus)
