Drumlines at ISU are open to ALL Illinois State University students. ISU Drumlines perform at Illinois State Athletic events throughout the school year. The Big Red Marching Machine Drumline performs with the BRMM during the football season, and our Basketball Drumline provides entertainment for fans at Men's and Women's Basketball games.
Instrumentation consists of Snare Drums, Multi-tenors, Tonal Bass Drums, and Cymbals.
If you are interested in participating in the drumline or having them perform at your event, please contact Ben Stiers.
As one of the newest performing ensembles on campus, the ISU Basketball Drumline entertains audiences at select Men's and Women's Basketball games and other events during the Spring semester. The group performs both on and off the court to add excitement to the gameday atmosphere.
Auditions for snare, tenor, and bass drums will be held on Monday, December 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Cook Hall 212. Students with a conflict during the audition time may submit a video audition or contact Ben Stiers to set up an individual audition time. There is no audition required to play cymbals.
During the fall semester, the ISU Drumline functions as a section of the Big Red Marching Machine, appearing at all home football games, parades, and other BRMM performances, and also performs independently at select campus events. Learn more about becoming a member of the Big Red Marching Machine.
The BRMM Drumline attends all rehearsals (including pre-season Band Camp) and performances with the Big Red Marching Machine. In addition, each week the Drumline also holds a 90-minute sectional rehearsal, and each sub-section holds its own one-hour rehearsal—the times for these rehearsals are determined at the start of the semester according to the schedules of members and staff. If you are willing to put in the time and energy to learn the music and participate in rehearsals and performances, we will find a spot for you. The selection process for snare drum, tenor, and bass drum is competitive. Please email Ben Stiers if you are interested in participating.
Auditions are required for all members playing snare drum, tenor, and bass drum. There is no audition required to play cymbals. Audition music packets will be available on this page (in the box to the right) no later than April 1.
Snare, tenor, and bass drum auditions will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Cook Hall on the Illinois State University campus. If you cannot make that date, video auditions are an option. Video audition information will be included in the audition packets when they are available.
Results will be sent via email within a week after the audition date.
Cymbals do not require an audition—all who wish to march cymbals are welcome beginning with Cymbal Clinic Day on July 20. Cymbal players, please contact Ben Stiers to let us know you are coming so we can plan ahead.
2019 ISU Drumline summer clinic days will be held in and around Cook Hall. These clinics are not strictly required, but members are expected to attend if available on the dates their sections are involved. These clinics are integral to our ability to refine music that we will be performing throughout the season. Meals are on your own, and any overnight housing you may need will be arranged among members of the drumline.
