The Bassoon studio at Illinois State is a diverse and talented group of individuals. The studio is comprised of approximately 10 students from all walks of life. Whether you are a music student or have a serious interest in bassoon, there is a a place for you. There are many different opportunities to learn and grow as a bassoonist at Illinois State.
In addition, there is a weekly “master class” session during which a variety of activities take place. There may be student performances, bassoon ensemble rehearsals, or guest appearances.
What is more, we have a chamber ensemble program in which you will have the opportunity to perform woodwind quintets and other literature. Each chamber ensemble is coached by a full time faculty artist.
“The reed is the key which opens the door to bassoon playing.” My students jump right into reed making from the start of the Illinois State experience. I will guide you and help you to acquire the necessary training and tools. Necessary tools are available to studio members while the student will have to provide materials, at a minimal price.
The following suggestions are representative of acceptable repertoire for undergraduate admission auditions. You are NOT limited to what is listed. Students should not hesitate to use music similar in nature and difficulty.
Auditions at Illinois State are approximately 15 minutes in length and allow you to showcase your skills for a small audience. The studio teacher and other woodwind faculty will listen, ask questions and answer any of your questions. We understand that this is a stressful time and we strive to make this experience as enjoyable and positive as possible. Below are a list of suggested selections for your audition.
If you are currently working on literature with a private teacher, that repertoire may also be appropriate. Please reach out and communicate with us on what pieces you may be preparing and whether or not they will be appropriate.
Bassoonists at Illinois State University have a multitude of opportunities to perform and work with other aspiring professional musicians. Bassoonists have the opportunity to perform in almost every large ensemble here on campus. Placement is based on semester placement auditions for each studio.Bassoonists have the opportunity to perform with large ensembles on campus. This experience is an important part of musical education. Unlike some institutions where ensembles favor graduate students above all others, Illinois State offers the essential training of ensemble playing for all. Whether you are a major, minor, general student you will gain this experience even as a first year student.
There are a multitude of groups in the Bloomington-Normal area that we encourage students to audition for. Whether you earn a position in one of these groups, or not it is a great audition experience that helps build more experienced professionals.
