The tuba and euphonium studio is a very active component within the School of Music at Illinois State University located in Normal, Illinois. The studio is comprised of approximately 18 undergraduate and graduate music majors that are pursuing music degrees in education, performance, therapy, business, and composition, as well as the liberal arts degree in music.
For the past fifty years, the tuba and euphonium studio at Illinois State University has enjoyed a rich legacy of producing some of the world’s finest low brass musicians. The strong low brass tradition began in 1968 with the university’s first tuba-euphonium professor, Ed Livingston, and continues to this day through the teaching of Ed’s student, Andy Rummel. The studio is a tightknit, supportive, positive environment that strives to help students achieve their highest level of performance possible.
Tuba and euphonium students with a declared music major will have one 50 minute private lesson with Dr. Rummel each week.
Tuba and euphonium masterclass occurs twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3-4pm. This time is typically used for tuba-euphonium ensemble rehearsals and for performance class.
This program is a great way for musicians to work in small ensembles like trios, quartets, etc. These groups are often arranged by the professor. While some groups are comprised of one instrument, many others include a mixture of instruments.
The Illinois State University Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble is comprised of students that are currently studying tuba or euphonium as part of their degree sequence. The tuba-euphonium ensemble was featured performers at the 2015 and 2013 Midwest Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conferences as well as the 2015 and 2013 International Conferences for the National Association for Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians. The tuba-euph ensemble was the first ensemble of its kind to perform at the Illinois Music Educators All-State Music Conference in 2011 performed again in 2016.
