Art Teacher Education M.S.

Required courses for a M.S. in Art with a Sequence in Art Education


All students pursuing a M.S. in Art must complete 32 semester hours of graduate credit and either a master’s thesis or a comprehensive examination. All students must complete 18 hours of core courses: ART 401 Foundations of Art Education, 402 Issues in Art Education, 403 Curriculum in Art Education, 475 Graduate Seminar in Visual Culture, 478 Introduction to Critical Theory, 497 Introduction to Research Methodology.

For students electing to complete the thesis, the remaining 14 hours should include: at least 6 credit hours in elective courses that reflect the student’s interests and/or Special Projects in Art Education and 6 credit hours in ART 499 Thesis.

For students electing to complete the comprehensive examination, the remaining 14 credit hours should be earned in elective courses that reflect the student’s interests and/or Special Projects in Art Education.

All master’s degree programs require a minimum of 50 percent of the non-thesis credit hours applied to the degree to be 400-level courses or above.

Art 109: 3D Fundamentals
Art 228: Ceramics I
Three hours from one of the following areas: Metalwork, Wood, Sculpture, or Glass
Art 261: Painting
Art 300 level 3 hours in a studio content already taken

Art 155: Survey of Art I
Art 156: Survey of Art II
One of the following: Art 281: Intro to Modern Art or Art 282: Intro to Contemporary Art
