Painting

Overview

The Painting program fosters a broad range of approaches to media and ideas. From beginning to advanced courses, students learn the principles and practices of painting as a discipline of visual inquiry. Beginning studio classes introduce students to traditional and contemporary methods in painting, while intermediate and advanced painting classes develop the student’s individual ideas and experimental approaches informed by contemporary practices. Painting students are encouraged to expand their creative explorations with individual research and to evolve new directions for their studio work as they progress towards graduation. Students will develop a critical understanding of their work and the work of their peers through group critiques and one-on-one critiques with faculty. Painting faculty help students to develop the creative and professional practices that will sustain an ongoing creative life and career beyond graduation.
