Choir Auditions

Choral Ensembles

The Illinois State University choral program consists of non-auditioned and auditioned ensembles.

Non-Auditioned Ensembles

Treble Choir (MUS 186A01) is a non-auditioned treble ensemble. All first-time-in-college soprano/alto non-music majors should enroll in this ensemble. Membership is considered annual (both fall and spring semesters).

Civic Chorale (MUS 188) is a non-auditioned mixed ensemble which combines Illinois State University students and community members. All students may enroll without an audition.

Auditioned Ensembles

University Choir (Trebles MUS 186A02; Tenor/Bass MUS 185) is an auditioned mixed choir that consists of vocal music majors admitted to a voice studio (by placement) and non-music majors (by audition). Membership is considered annual (both fall and spring semesters).

Concert Choir (MUS 184/MUS 484) is an auditioned mixed choir open only to returning students and transfer students. First-time-in-college vocal music students are automatically placed University Choir. Membership is considered annual (both fall and spring semesters).

 

 

 

Audition Materials

Audition preparation details and sign up time slots are available below.

University Choir

Incoming music majors with a vocal emphasis assigned to a voice studio are automatically placed in University Choir as their ensemble placement. 

Auditions will take place March 23-27, 2026 in Cook Hall room 109. Students interested in auditioning may sign up for an available slot.

Audition Requirements

  • Be prepared to sing about 16 measures of a solo of your choice unaccompanied or "Happy Birthday" unaccompanied.
  • You will be led through various vocal exercises to demonstrate your range and to test your ear
  • Sight singing
  • Tonal Memory skills (Dr. Bruhn will play a short passage and ask you to sing it back to him unaccompanied).

What does Dr. Bruhn want to hear in auditions?

  • Beautiful sound
  • Easy vocalism
  • Vocal independence
  • Superior intonation
  • Knowledge of key signatures
  • Strong sight reading on solfege with skips in the I, IV, and V chords

Concert Choir
