Exhibition Statement

returning to / trở về is a collection of photographs by Sarah Eckstine and Jade Nguyen, two Midwest transplants from rural Western Maryland and Phan Thiet, Vietnam respectively. This exhibition pairs photographs of the two regions together born from the visual cues of composition and leading lines, subject matter, color, as well as the overall atmosphere and feeling the images evoke. Eckstine and Nguyen share a similar eye for choosing what they photograph—the calmer moments occurring in the landscape, those with no or very little human presence, and believe that photography acts as a language that can communicate the shared feelings of longing, remembrance, and the desire to be reacquainted with the land.
