Illustration at ISU

This exhibition showcases the work of students enrolled in an emerging Illustration discipline within the Studio Art sequence at the Wonsook Kim School of Art in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.

These students embarked on an intensive journey into the practical and conceptual foundations of illustration, exploring both traditional and digital media to develop their technical skills, critical thinking, and creative vision.

Illustration is often difficult to define, as it is not confined to a single medium but instead driven by purpose—the intent to visually communicate ideas and information. Unlike disciplines traditionally identified by their materials, illustration encompasses a broad range of approaches, where technique and form serve the demands of storytelling and communication.

Through daily drawing exercises, media exploration, and sketchbook work, students engage in visual storytelling across various formats, including comics, picture books, visual essays, and editorial illustrations.

We invite you to explore this collection of work, which showcases the dedication, curiosity, and emerging voices of these talented students while highlighting the possibilities that illustration offers in shaping how we share stories and ideas.
