Jazz Ensembles

Jazz Ensemble I

Jazz Ensemble I is the premiere jazz big band at Illinois State University and is comprised of a select group of the University's finest instrumentalists. This outstanding ensemble performs a wide range of big band literature including all styles from historical to cutting edge. Membership is by audition only and is open to all Illinois State University students.

Jazz Ensemble II

Jazz Ensemble II is a group of 16–20 instrumentalists who perform a wide range of big band literature including all styles from historical to cutting edge. Membership is by audition only and is open to all Illinois State University students.

Combo

Various jazz combos of three to ten players are formed primarily from members of Jazz Ensembles I and II. Membership is by audition only and is open to all Illinois State University students.

Combo rehearsals are scheduled individually according to availability of members, but generally meet for 50 minutes, twice a week.

How to Join

All students regardless of major are welcome to audition for the jazz ensembles.

ISU Jazz Festival

The annual Illinois State University Jazz Festival is the highlight of the year for jazz on campus. In addition to a competition between numerous high school and junior high jazz ensembles, the festival features two evening showings of a collaborative performance by ISU Jazz Ensembles with a renowned guest artist.
