Overview
At Illinois State University, we are proud to offer the Bachelor of Science in Music Business degree. The Music Business sequence exposes musicians to the vast opportunities for careers in the music industry. Students examine topics from songwriting, revenue flow, industry mechanics, and entrepreneurial practices and visit with guest speakers ranging from classical music publishers to major label A&R people, from DIY punk musicians to hip-hop producers. The program culminates in time in a local recording studio and requires an internship in the field. In addition to the core music requirements, students need to complete 25 hours of coursework in the School of Music and the nationally recognized College of Business.
The Music Business degree enables students to develop their musical skills while preparing them to become leaders, thinkers, and creators in the new music industry.
Why Study Music Business?
Music is integral to a multitude of businesses. Our alumni find enjoyment in managing musicians, managing venues where music occurs, editing, owning their own music shop or private teaching studio, and working in copyright or mass media communications. Entrepreneurial students can benefit from this major as a conduit to working in the music industry.
To be considered for admittance into the music program at Illinois State, one must have extensive background in classical music and must complete a classical music audition.
